Pavane is a setting of Christina Rossetti’s desolate poem, What would I give? The piece revolves around a slow sixteen-note ostinato played in the viola. Around this the piano spins a cyclical melodic thread in the highest register. In the second stanza the soprano makes a valiant effort to fight against the feeling of desolation, and encourages a violent outburst from the piano and viola; but the outburst is short-lived and ultimately futile and all that remains is the continuous cycle of ostinato and piano melody.
