Strange Voices is a setting of Christina Rossetti’s sonnet of the same name for twelve-part choir. The piece begins with a quiet sustained E in the basses, with the musical material gradually building in layers across the choir. The concept of layering material is an important theme of the piece, with each group of singers – sopranos, altos, tenors, basses – often having their own triadic or consonant musical material, but in opposition with the similarly consonant material in the other voices.
